HISTORY OF ‘THE LOOM’
Woven was founded with the propagation of new works as our focus because new works are what we love. During our second season, we decided to expand our focus from simply producing new works and began to dip into new work development.
Our 2017 season ended with our first showing of The Loom, which presented one script: Opus: The Totally Real, Not Made Up Story of a Boy and His Skeleton by River Timms. In 2018, we opened submissions to playwrights for the first time, and we picked and presented six new scripts to the Nashville area. We continued the tradition in 2019, receiving over three times as many scripts as we did the previous year. The Loom, unfortunately, could not be presented in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but we are opening submissions for the 2021 season!
The Loom is primarily a development opportunity; however, plays read for The Loom are also considered for future production. Woven firmly believes that plays are developed so that they may be produced. The Loom is for playwright development, yes, but it’s also about developing relationships with up-and-coming playwrights that can continue to grow over the course of their careers.
