2021 season

When the world shuts down and you can’t develop new plays and you LOVE developing new plays what do you do? Well, if you're us you double down! Welcome to the December of Development. Over the course of 3 weeks Woven Theatre will develop 10 different plays from writers all across the country. Join us for The Loom, The Cutting Room, and a few extra readings for good measure.

The Loom

Woven Theatre is committed to and passionate about creating new theatre, and that is why we annually present The Loom, a new works festival in which new plays are selected for public staged readings. Plays are carefully considered from submissions, and the selected plays and playwrights are paired with directors that choose casts and set up rehearsals in preparation for the festival. We hope The Loom will serve as a platform for playwrights to hear and better understand their plays, expose them to a larger audience, and give actors and directors opportunities to explore and express their artistry.

The Cutting Room

New works are near and dear to our hearts and have become an essential component of our identity and programming. To expand our new play development we have begun a new initiative called: The Cutting Room.

We are beyond grateful and excited to have Ground Effect by Jonathan Alexandratos in our first cycle.

Ciel has crashed in their childhood home, the Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee. They're a plane, you see, but not everyone believes them. As a result, Ciel doubts they'll ever fly again. However, as disaster inches closer, friend and foe alike motivate Ciel to try jumpstarting those engines one more time. The question is: can they get off the ground before it's too late? A story of finding home when home has been taken from you, Ground Effect presents the diverse range of characters often left out of Appalachian narratives as they claim the place that has been theirs for generations.

Readings

Alongside The Loom and The Cutting, we are also having developmental readings of 3 other new plays by Resident Playwright River Timms, New Works Co-Director Erica JoLloyd, and Sofia Tosches.

BURNOUT

By River Timms

Noah is just like any normal millennial; he is burdened with thousands upon thousands of dollars of student loan debt, and he copes with his stress by consuming large amounts of marijuana. His job as a barworker doesn't pay nearly enough to keep the bills in order or even pay rent, and he survives by the grace of his boyfriend and roommate, Ryan. As Noah begins to look for options in maneuvering through his own personal debt crisis, his encroaching deadline to begin payments draws ever closer, and the stress pushes him to the limit as he tries to juggle his relationships, his finances, and his health the best he can.

GENESIS PROJECT

By Erica Jo Lloyd

There is a commercial colony on Mars, not so far in the future, called Genesis. After twenty years in existence, it is ostensibly a bastion of advanced science, but there are experiments happening that future colonists - and some current colonists - don’t know about. When Dr. Violet Scott and her husband Hale arrive, they discover that their dream of creating a new life on Mars is not what they thought it would be.

White Elephant

By Sofia Tosches

Join Woven Theatre for a night of Holiday Fun. Because subtlety is sometimes boring we are leaning heavy into this play. Come by and have a drink, listen to some music, watch some holiday movies, THEN watch a reading, THEN participate in an audience and cast wide white elephant gift exchange! Feel free to bring a little gift to add to the table.
